## In short

- Each Tier-I part gives about 36 seconds for each question.
- A wrong answer costs one quarter of the marks of a correct answer in Tier-I.
- The 2025 UR cutoff of 144.26 equals about 72 correct answers with no wrong answers.
- Typing and computer tests are qualifying, so a candidate must prepare for them.

An SSC CHSL 2026 preparation strategy must follow the exam pattern and the cutoffs that the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) published. The numbers on this page come from the notice of 7 September 2026 and from the Tier-I results of 2024 and 2025. Read the [SSC CHSL 2026 guide](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/) for the overview.

## Which pattern facts shape the SSC CHSL 2026 preparation strategy?

Tier-I gives **15 minutes** for **25 questions** in each part. That is about **36 seconds** for each question. SSC does not let a candidate move spare time from one part to another. Slow practice in one part cannot be repaid by fast work in another.

Each wrong answer costs **0.50 marks**, one quarter of the 2 marks for a correct answer. A candidate who answers fast but wrongly loses marks. Check the [exam pattern](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/exam-pattern/) for the full marking rules.

## How many correct answers does a cutoff need?

Use the [previous year cutoff](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/previous-year-cutoff/) to set a target. The arithmetic below uses 2 marks for each correct answer and ignores wrong answers.

| Year | UR cutoff for LDC/JSA | Equal to about |
| ---- | --------------------- | ------------------ |
| 2024 | 157.36 | 79 correct answers |
| 2025 | 144.26 | 72 correct answers |

SSC uses normalized marks, so a raw score can differ from these numbers. Set the target above the higher figure to keep a margin. Wrong answers also reduce the score, so accuracy matters as much as speed.

## How can a candidate plan the days before Tier-I?

1. **Cover the syllabus first.** Use the [syllabus page](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/syllabus/) as a checklist. Mark each topic when you can solve a timed set from it.
2. **Practice one part at a time.** Set a 15-minute timer for 25 questions. Do this for English, reasoning, quantitative aptitude and general awareness.
3. **Take full tests.** Solve all four parts in 60 minutes. Keep the same order in every test.
4. **Review each test.** List the questions that you got wrong and the ones that took too long.
5. **Skip with a rule.** Leave a question if it passes your time limit. A wrong answer costs marks.

## How can a candidate prepare for Tier-II?

Tier-II has longer sections. Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning get 30 minutes for 30 questions each. English gets 40 minutes for 40 questions. General Awareness gets 20 minutes for 20 questions. A wrong answer costs **1 mark**, which is one third of the 3 marks for a correct answer.

Tier-II adds statistics and probability to the quantitative syllabus, and comprehension passages to English. Add these topics to your plan early. The merit list uses only Section-I and Section-II, which carry **360 marks**.

## What else must a candidate prepare?

- **Computer Knowledge Test.** It has 15 questions for 45 marks. A UR candidate needs at least 30%, which is 13.5 marks. Study the computer topics from the syllabus.
- **Typing test for LDC/JSA.** Practice 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for 10 minutes. Hindi typing uses the Mangal font.
- **Skill test for DEO.** Practice typing for 15 minutes at 8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour, depending on the post group.

These tests are qualifying. A candidate who fails one cannot be selected.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I prepare for SSC CHSL 2026 Tier-I?

Practice each part in its own 15-minute timer. Cover the official syllabus topics first. Then take full 60-minute tests with four parts. Review every wrong answer, and skip a question that costs too much time.

### How many questions must I answer correctly to reach the cutoff?

Each correct answer earns 2 marks. The 2025 UR cutoff for LDC/JSA was 144.26 normalized marks, which equals about 72 correct answers with no wrong answers. Normalized marks differ from raw marks, so aim higher.

### Do I need to prepare for the computer test?

Yes. The Computer Knowledge Test in Tier-II has 15 questions for 45 marks and is qualifying. A UR candidate needs 30% of the marks. A candidate who fails it cannot be selected, whatever the other scores are.

### How much typing practice does CHSL need?

LDC/JSA candidates need 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for 10 minutes. DEO candidates type for 15 minutes at 8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour. Practice in the language you chose.
