## In short

- The exam has two tiers, and Tier-II has a skill test or typing test.
- Tier-I only shortlists candidates. The merit list uses Tier-II marks.
- Qualifying marks are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for others.
- SSC keeps no waiting list.

The SSC CHSL 2026 selection process has two computer based tiers. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) then asks for post preferences and builds a merit list. The user departments check documents after the final result. Read the [SSC CHSL 2026 guide](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/) for the overview and the [exam pattern page](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/exam-pattern/) for marks and time.

## What are the stages of the SSC CHSL 2026 selection process?

1. **Tier-I (CBE).** SSC shortlists candidates for Tier-II by their normalized Tier-I scores.
2. **Tier-II (CBE).** A candidate takes all four sections on the same day. These are Mathematical Abilities with Reasoning, English with General Awareness, a Computer Knowledge Test and a Skill Test or Typing Test.
3. **Post preference.** SSC takes preferences through an online option form before the result.
4. **Merit list and allocation.** SSC allots posts by merit and by preference.
5. **Document verification.** The user ministries and departments do this after the final result.

## How does SSC set qualifying marks and cutoffs?

SSC sets minimum qualifying marks for Tier-I and for Sections I, II and III of Tier-II.

| Category | Minimum qualifying marks |
| -------------------- | ------------------------ |
| UR | 30% |
| OBC and EWS | 25% |
| All other categories | 20% |

SSC can fix separate category-wise cutoffs for three post groups. These are DEO and DEO Grade 'A' in the three bodies that need Mathematics, other DEO and DEO Grade 'A' posts, and LDC/JSA. See the [previous year cutoff page](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/previous-year-cutoff/) for the past numbers.

## How does SSC build the merit list?

SSC prepares the merit list from the **total marks in Section-I and Section-II of Tier-II only**. A candidate must also qualify Section-III and Section-IV. A candidate must qualify every section of Tier-II.

If two candidates tie, SSC applies these tests in order:

1. Marks in Section-I of Tier-II.
2. Marks in Tier-I.
3. Date of birth, with the older candidate ranked higher.

## How do post preferences work?

A candidate gives preferences for posts and departments in an online option form. SSC does not consider a candidate for a post that the candidate did not choose. The choice is **final and cannot be changed**.

SSC gives each candidate the first available preference by merit. If the candidate later fails a medical, physical or education standard for that post, SSC rejects the candidature. SSC does not offer another post.

## What happens at document verification?

The user departments verify documents after SSC declares the final result. A candidate may need these papers:

- The matriculation or secondary certificate.
- The education certificate for the 12th standard.
- The caste, category or disability certificate, if the candidate claims one.
- The ex-serviceman papers, if the candidate claims that status.
- Proof of any age relaxation.
- A No Objection Certificate, if the candidate already works for the government.
- Name change papers, if the name differs from the matriculation certificate.

SSC cancels the candidature if a claim has no proof. Medical and physical standards are checked by the user departments after the result.

## What is the next step?

See the [exam pattern](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/exam-pattern/) for the marks of each section. Then read the [syllabus](/article/ssc/ssc-chsl-2026/syllabus/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the SSC CHSL 2026 selection process?

The process has Tier-I, Tier-II, a skill test or typing test, post preference, merit list and document verification. Tier-I shortlists candidates. The merit list uses Section-I and Section-II marks of Tier-II only.

### Do Tier-I marks count in the final merit?

No. SSC uses Tier-I only to shortlist candidates for Tier-II. The merit list uses the total of Section-I and Section-II marks of Tier-II. SSC uses Tier-I marks only to break a tie.

### What are the minimum qualifying marks in SSC CHSL 2026?

The minimum is 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for all other categories. These apply to Tier-I and to Sections I, II and III of Tier-II. Reaching them does not guarantee a shortlist.

### Is the typing test or skill test compulsory?

Yes. Tier-II needs a pass in every section. DEO candidates must take the skill test. LDC/JSA candidates must take the typing test unless a PwD candidate has an approved exemption for inability to type.

### Does SSC publish a waiting list for CHSL?

No. SSC does not keep a waiting list for multi-factor exams. It uses a sliding mechanism for the First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA). SSC explained it in notices dated 3 March 2026 and 8 April 2026.
