The RRB Radiographer X-Ray Technician selection process has three stages. A candidate must clear the computer-based test (CBT), document verification (DV) and the medical examination. Return to the pillar guide for the full overview.
What is the RRB Radiographer X-Ray Technician selection process?
- CBT. A single-stage test with 100 questions. See the exam pattern for marks and timing.
- Document verification. The RRB checks original certificates for shortlisted candidates.
- Medical examination. Railway medical authorities test fitness and vision.
- Empanelment. The RRB makes a panel on merit.
The RRB may add more CBTs or more document checks for all or some candidates. Read the official website for any such notice.
How does the RRB shortlist candidates after the CBT?
The RRB shortlists candidates RRB-wise at a ratio of 1 to 1 with the vacancies of that RRB. The RRB calls candidates equal to the number of vacancies. The call depends on merit in the CBT.
The RRB normalizes marks if it holds the CBT in many shifts. A candidate must also score the minimum qualifying marks for the category.
| Category | Minimum qualifying marks |
|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 40 percent |
| OBC-NCL and SC | 30 percent |
| ST | 25 percent |
These rules also apply to ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates, as per their community. The RRB may cut the minimum by 2 marks for PwBD candidates if too few qualify. The minimum marks do not guarantee a call, because the RRB calls candidates in merit order.
How does the RRB break a tie?
The older candidate ranks higher. If the age is the same, the RRB uses the alphabetical order of the given name. The RRB does not use the surname.
What happens at document verification?
The RRB asks shortlisted candidates to bring original documents and two sets of self-attested photocopies. A candidate who does not bring the originals on the day can lose the candidature. A candidate who is absent loses the candidature.
- Upload a true-colour photo and signature on the DV portal before your DV date.
- Bring certificates in English or Hindi. Bring a self-attested translation for any other language.
- Bring a colour passport photograph that is not older than two months.
- Bring the right certificate for each claim, such as SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, ex-servicemen or PwBD.
- Bring an NOC from your employer if you work for a government body.
A claim without the right certificate in the right format falls under the general category, if the candidate is eligible. The RRB checks eligibility against the original papers at this stage.
What does the medical examination test?
The RRB tests fitness against medical standard B1 for this post. Railway medical authorities run the test. A candidate who fails gets no other post.
| B1 vision item | Standard |
|---|---|
| Distance vision | 6/9 and 6/12, with or without glasses, lens power up to 4D |
| Near vision | Sn 0.6 and 0.6, with or without glasses |
| Other tests | Colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and mesopic vision |
A candidate who fails the first test may get one last medical appeal on payment of the set charges. The result of the appeal is final.
How does the final panel work?
The RRB makes the panel on CBT merit, a clear document check and a pass in the medical test. The RRB then allots the post and the Railway zone by merit, preference, medical fitness and vacancy position. Empanelled candidates lose the right to any other post at the same pay level.
The RRB only recommends names. The Railway administration issues the offer of appointment.
What is the next step?
Study the exam pattern for the CBT. Check the eligibility rules if you plan to claim age relaxation. The next step in the guide is the exam pattern.
